Changes to the Essure Product Description

Essure birth control devices description has gone from being a temporary form of birth control to a method of permanent sterilization on par with tubal ligation or hysterectomy

Friday, May 4, 2018 - One of the most unexpected and devastating side effects women have suffered from the Essure birth control device is being left permanently unable to have children. Only recently did the company begin to warn women that Essure was a permanent solution for birth control. Prior to that, Essure was sold on the basis that it could be easily removed, without the need for surgery, at the time a woman wanted to have children. Today's Essure.com warning states, "Some patients implanted with the Essure System for "Permanent" Birth Control have experienced and/or reported adverse events, including perforation of the uterus and/or fallopian tubes, identification of inserts in the abdominal or pelvic cavity, persistent pain, and suspected allergic or hypersensitivity reactions. If the device needs to be removed to address such an adverse event, a surgical procedure will be required." With this warning, the company now admits that Essure has left millions of women who intended to have the device removed without surgery and start a family, permanently sterile.

Essure is recommended as an alternative to hysterectomy or tubal ligation, methods that both require invasive surgery and general anesthesia. During a hysterectomy, the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes are surgically removed. Another name for tubal ligation is having your, "tubes tied." If a woman chooses this procedure, her fallopian tubes are clamped, severed, and tied. Both procedures, hysterectomy, and tubal ligation are permanent, require admission to a hospital and invasive surgery that carries the risks of surgical error or infection. The Essure procedure, on the other hand, can be done in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office without surgery as the device is inserted through the vagina and sets up shop within the Fallopian tubes. In approximately three months, the scar tissue builds up around the Essure coil will block the man's sperm from reaching a woman's eggs in the uterus. With tubal ligation and hysterectomy, a couple can return to having sex within a week or so, while with Essure it is recommended that a patient wait at least three months to allow the device to heal in place.

The Essure birth control device resembles the spring from a retractable ballpoint pen. According to Essure.com, "The inserts do not contain hormones and are made from some of the same material that is used in heart stents and other medical devices. (NOTE: The Essure insert is made of materials that include polyester fibers, nickel, titanium, platinum, silver-tin and stainless steel." The outer coil is made from a nickel-titanium alloy and the inner coil is made from stainless steel, wrapped in polyethylene fiber designed to irritate the fallopian tissue and cause scar tissue to develop, anchoring the device in place and blocking the sperm's passage. Thousands of women are hiring an Essure attorney to sue the company because of the unexpected allergic and auto-immune reactions they are having to the metals that make up the device.
