Use Caution When Preemptively Removing Essure

In order to have the best odds of a successful Essure removal, one might opt for preemptive surgery before experiencing pain

Thursday, July 18, 2019 - If you visit the Facebook group Essure Problems you can read the horror stories that Essure has caused for over 40,000 women and ask their advice as to whether you should have preemptive Essure removal surgery. If you ask me, the answer would be yes but only you can make that decision. Whatever you do, do not go back to the doctor where Essure was implanted because they have a vested financial and legal interest in having you keep using the device. In most cases, your doctor is unable and unwilling to remove the device and will say you are crazy. You must find an Essure removal doctor who specializes in the Essure removal procedure and has a demonstrable track record of success in removing the device. Essure

I just received an email from Essure Problems telling that it is critically important to not break the device when attempting to remove it and that doctors attempting to remove Essure need to be extremely gentle in order to get all of it. Doctors who have successfully removed Essure from the Fallopian tubes say that the device must be "teased" not pulled or tugged to prevent the device from breaking or the delicate Fallopian tube tissue from tearing. Essure is wrapped in Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers in order to create irritation and scar tissue to hold Essure in place. These fibers can easily break free in a removal attempt and cause infection, lacerations, and perforations to other organs in the body.

Essure removal should leave the uterus and Fallopian tubes intact and healthy. If Essure is optimally removed the Fallopian tubes may be reattached or repaired and the sterilization process could actually be reversed as the tubes merely act as an open transport tunnel for the sperm to get up to the eggs. If an Essure woman waits until they experience pain there is a good chance that the device has migrated into the uterus and that contractions to expel the device only sink it deeper and deeper into the tissue necessitating a hysterectomy to remove parts of the reproductive system.

Bayer, the maker of Essure, offers little guidance as to how to remove Essure. The company, however, continues to stand by the risk/reward profile of the birth control device. Essure's owner's manual tells doctors that "The Essure procedure should be considered irreversible. Safety and effectiveness of reversal surgery is unknown. Surgery including device removal, hysterectomy or other procedures may be required to treat the pain." Essure removal can result in having to undergo multiple surgeries if the surgeon fails to remove the device intact or otherwise breaks the device and leaves a piece behind. Device location can be difficult if there are pieces in multiple locations. What will you do if Essure breaks into 3 or more pieces and migrate and lacerate multiple organs? Believe it or not, this has happened and some women are sentenced to a lifetime of misery from the pain, cramping, bleeding and infections that Essure fragments cause. Essure can calcify and become fragile and brittle.
