Nickel Hypersensitivity Could Leave Essure Women With An Itchy Rash Covering Their Entire Body

The Essure birth control device is intended as permanent birth control and as such the device will remain inside a woman's reproductive organs for as long as she lives and so will Essure's complications

Monday, March 18, 2019 - Nickel hypersensitivity is a serious condition that could cause life-altering medical problems for hundreds of thousands of women that are allergic to the heavy metal. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that as many as 20% of the population of the United States suffer from allergies to the heavy metal Nitinol, an alloy found in the Essure birth control device containing Nickel. The Essure birth control device is intended to be permanent birth control and as such the device will remain inside a woman's reproductive organs for as long as she lives.

As a result of a concern for the millions of women that have the permanent Essure device implanted in them, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has opened an investigation to find out more as to how the Essure birth control device, covered in Nickel, could be causing Nickel hypersensitivity, autoimmune problems as well as allergic reactions in women that use Essure. National Essure birth control device attorneys representing women in the United States harmed by Essure birth control device and offer free consultations and advice before filing a claim.

Prior to opening the investigation into Nickel, the potential side effect's caused by the presence of Nickel in the Essure birth control device prompted the FDA to include a warning about Nickel in the FDA's Essure Patient Checklist. In 2018 the FDA instituted stringent guidelines upon Essure doctors to ensure they properly advised their patients of the potentially harmful side effects Essure causes. Clients accepting the Essure device must sign and understand the following declaration: "I understand that the Essure implants contain metals including nickel, titanium, iron, chromium, and tin, as well as a material called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). I understand that some women may develop allergic reactions to the device following implantation and have signs or symptoms such as rash and itching. This may occur even if there is no prior history of sensitivity to those materials." The warning goes on to emphasize that allergic reactions to Nickel could entail persistent pain and necessitate having major surgery to remove Essure. The major surgery referred to in the Essure warning is most likely a total hysterectomy, the only method guaranteed to remove Essure that most Essure doctors are comfortable performing. Essure removal is fraught with complications even if a woman is lucky enough to find a doctor willing to attempt the procedure short of a total hysterectomy. Essure removal often breaks the device apart and parts can be left behind traveling to other organs in the body.

Nickel hypersensitivity is a serious condition and can have catastrophic medical consequences. Nickel allergies often begin as what appears to be a harmless, itchy rash. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Nickel allergy signs and symptoms include:, Rash or bumps on the skin, Itching, which may be severe, Redness or changes in skin color, Dry patches of skin that may resemble a burn, Blisters and draining fluid in severe cases.
