Commission-driven Essure Sales Representatives May Be To Blame For Bribing Doctors to Recommend Essure

A doctor's letter to his peers and CNN investigative reporting may have uncovered the reasons behind Essure's unearned popularity

Monday, April 8, 2019 - For the better part of the last decade, gynecologists have been recommending the Essure birth control device to patients rather than recommending the tried and true method of tubal ligation, a procedure that has been 100% effective for over 50 years. It has been discovered, however, that Essure doctors make hundreds of times more money per hour by performing Essure insertion than they do to perform tubal ligation and also are paid an indirect, unethical commission by Bayer sales reps based loosely on how many Essures the doctor sells. "A CNN analysis of federal data shows that from August 2013 through December 2017, Bayer paid 11,850 doctors $2.5 million related to Essure for consulting fees and similar services." Cnn reports that "Dr. Cindy Basinski was paid $168,068 for consulting fees and similar services from August 2013 through the end of 2017." Doctors hide this unethical payment from Bayer by accounting for it as teaching fees or consulting fees however nobody is ever officially taught and certainly, no one other than the sales reps themselves is ever consulted with.

Human nature being what it is, doctors included, it has been easy for them to not only take the additional income but also to become Essure's cheerleader. When Essure patients come back days, weeks, or months later in excruciating pain, doctors uniformly tell the patient that they are crazy, that Essure could not possibly be the cause of their pain, and that it is "all in their head." Doctors are being driven by greed and ignorance of the tens of thousands of Essure patients that have had the device migrate and lacerate their uterus causing extreme pain and excessive bleeding. Being unwilling to properly diagnose Essure's adverse symptoms is medical malpractice of the highest degree. Still, others are forced to undergo a complete hysterectomy and their entire reproductive systems removed in order to ensure that all the broken pieces of Essure are included and removed.
