Essure Removal Can Create a Never-Ending Nightmare

Anything short of having a radical hysterectomy in attempting Essure removal could make matters worse

Thursday, April 4, 2019 - Women with Essure may be caught in a no-win situation. On the one hand, a woman needs to have the failed Essure birth control device removed in order to try and alleviate the pain, cramping, and the extreme bleeding the device is causing. On the other hand, a botched attempt to remove Essure could make the pain even greater and could make it permanent. The majority of Essure doctors will not attempt to remove Essure nor will they refer a patient to another doctor who may be able to. In fact, the internet is full of reports by Essure women that their Essure doctor will not even acknowledge that the device is causing their pain and suffering and that the symptoms are merely "in their head." Attempting Essure removal is a very difficult decision to have to make. Essure is a nickel-titanium coil inserted one into each Fallopian tube to create scarring and block fertilization. Certain gynecologists that have experience in removing Essure know the potential the device has for harming women and point to Essure's maker, Bayer's undue influence over these doctors. For women lucky enough to even find an Essure removal doctor, the overriding problem hindering Essure removal is that sometimes the device breaks apart during the removal procedure, leaving jagged, unretrievable metal fragments scattered throughout a patient's abdomen. Essure fragments are then free to lacerate or perforate other organs such as the uterus and cause extreme sharp stabbing pain, crippling cramping, excessive bleeding. When Essure is scattered throughout the body a woman may experience full-body aches, fatigue, lethargy, brain fog, and 24-7 pain as is the case with one particular Essure victim. Ms. Angie Firmalino was featured in the Netflix documentary The Bleeding Edge and tells of her Essure removal horror story.

In an interview published by Modern Healthcare, Ms. Firmalino explains that immediately after receiving the Essure birth control device, she "began experiencing problems, including heavy bleeding and back pain. Two years later, she discovered that one of the coils had dropped into her uterus and the other had rolled into a little ball, partially expelled from a Fallopian tube. Firmalino found a doctor to perform surgery to remove them, but after the operation, health problems gradually returned. Eventually, her primary care doctor ordered a pelvic X-ray, which revealed foreign bodies scattered throughout her abdomen."

Rather than solve the problem, a botched Essure removal can make matters even worse. As controversial as this sounds Essure women may want to have their Essure birth control device removed before adverse symptoms occur and their lives are ruined permanently.
