Comparing The Essure Birth Control Device With Tubal Ligation

Gynecologists in the United States continue to herald the wonders of the Essure birth control device over other methods of birth control such as tubal ligation

Friday, November 2, 2018 - Close to one million women around the world have had the Essure birth control device implanted in them by their gynecologist. Women who have experienced medical complications due to Essure report that their doctors "sold" the device to them by enthusiastically pointing out the benefits but failing to mention the devastating side effects that were being reported by women that had been injured or had gotten sick from Essure. Over ten thousand of women have now filed Essure birth control complications lawsuits.

Chances of Getting Pregnant

The rate of Essure failing and a woman becoming pregnant is up to 10 times greater with Essure than with tubal ligation. Back in April of 2014, the Chicago Tribune examined a scientific study that pitted the effectiveness of the controversial birth control method called Essure with tubal ligation, a traditional birth control technique. Little was known back then of the adverse side effects of Essure, however, doctors were becoming concerned about a high percentage of Essure patients becoming pregnant. A study published by the journal "Conception" found that "A team of researchers estimated Monday that as many as 9.6 percent of women could become pregnant within 10 years of undergoing hysteroscopic sterilization, or Essure," according to the Chicago Tribune article. Studies indicate that the rate of pregnancy for those having a tubal ligation at around 1% for the first ten years, increasing to 1.8% thereafter.

Convenience and Recovery Time

Doctors tell their Essure patients that the device can be implanted through the vagina into the Fallopian tubes (one Essure coil in each) in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office giving a patient the impression getting Essure is simple, quick and easy. Essure women, however, are required to abstain from having sex for at least 90 days after Essure in implanted so that sufficient scar tissue can develop, encase the device, and block fertilization. During this time, the sharp fibers that wrap around the Essure device are designed to painfully scratch and irritate the inner lining of the delicate Fallopian tube, causing lacerations that require time to heal. It is at this time that the risk of infection is heightened. The recovery time for a woman who elects tubal ligation is only a week or two and contraception is 100% from the first day. Most tubal ligations are performed when a woman is in the hospital giving birth to what they plan on being their last child so convenience is no objection.

Adverse Side Effects

While the adverse side effects of tubal ligation are limited to those associated with laparoscopic surgery, i.e incisional bleeding, infection, and nausea from anesthesia, Essure's side effects know no boundaries. Bayer itself admits on the Essure.com website that "The most common side effects women experience with the Essure procedure include cramping, mild to moderate pain, vaginal bleeding, and pelvic or back discomfort for a few days after the procedure. Some women experience headaches, nausea and/or vomiting, or dizziness and/or fainting.
