Essure Complication Could Be Permanent

Essure remains implanted in thousands of women and for them, the nightmare could just be starting

Thursday, August 30, 2018 - Essure birth control will continue to be sold until the end of 2018 when Bayer intends to discontinue sales. Given the fact that Bayer is the nation's best-selling birth control device it is hard to understand how the company can point to economic factors and a lack of sales as the reason for their US market withdrawal. Essure had previously been withdrawn from the global market for similar reasons. The company blames a lack of sales due to misinformation spread by the likes of 40,000 or so women who have written about their adverse medical consequences from using the device. Some women have written that they have been driven to near-suicide. Even celebrity activist Erin Brockovich and a US congressman Fitzgerald have attempted to get the FDA to remove the device pending further human testing.

Essure resembles the metal spring on a retractable ballpoint pen and is inserted into the vagina and then into a woman's Fallopian tubes, one in each. Over the next three months, Essure's polypropylene fibers are designed to create inflammation that the body responds to by encasing the device in scar tissue blocking the tube and blocking fertilization. Essure has been promoted by doctors as being an effective and safe alternative to other forms of birth control such as the pill, tubal ligation, and hysterectomy, the latter two requiring surgery and a hospital stay. Essure can be implanted in less than an hour in the comfort and convenience of the doctor's office and without using anesthesia.

One of the common problems with Essure is that the device tends to come loose from its intended location either in tack or by breaking apart and as a result, thousands of women have written of the life-threatening medical consequences. Women report that Essure causes permanent and disabling injuries by painfully puncturing the uterus. Other women complain of suffering from metal toxicity from the Nickel element in Essure. Full body skin rashes and mental and emotional issues have also led to Essure women suffering from severe depression. Some Essure women have gone as far as to consider attempting to take their own life.

Women who wish to remove Essure have met with frustration for several reasons. First, it is difficult to find a surgeon willing and able to perform the surgery. When they do an Essure patient may be forced to travel thousands of miles and stay somewhere at their own expense. In addition, health insurance rarely covers Essure's removal other related expenses. As a result, Essure women are talking with Essure attorneys to ascertain whether or not they qualify to sue Bayer for compensation for their medical expenses, lost income, mental anguish, and pain and suffering. Secondly, attempting to remove Essure may sometimes break the device and only a portion of Essure will be successfully removed. When even small fragments of Essure remain, the symptoms of Essure may continue indefinitely. Also, Essure removal is complicated when the device has migrated to another organ and has punctured it or has become embedded in it with scar tissue.
